The Thousand-Armed, Thousand-Eyed Bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara (千手千眼观世音菩萨)
at our Vihara
“May your journey towards awakening be filled with blessings.”
On the fifteenth day of the seventh lunar month (佛欢喜日), a day of rejoicing in the wholesome merits of the Sangha’s cultivation, the consecrated Thousand-Armed, Thousand-Eyed Bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara (千手千眼观世音菩萨) was respectfully enshrined at our Vihāra.
Facing the entrance, the Bodhisattva now stands beside the Heart Sūtra inscribed upon the wall—a serene presence welcoming all who enter and reminding us that compassion and wisdom are never far from us.
Avalokiteśvara embodies Great Compassion. The thousand arms and hands symbolise the countless ways compassion reaches out to those in need, while the many eyes represent the wisdom to see suffering clearly and respond with kindness, courage, and skilful means.
As taught in the Universal Gate Chapter of the Lotus Sūtra, Avalokiteśvara hears the cries of sentient beings and manifests in whatever form is appropriate to comfort, guide, and relieve suffering.
Yet the compassion of Avalokiteśvara is not simply about having every difficulty removed or every wish fulfilled. It points to something deeper: the courage to remain present with suffering, the wisdom to understand its causes, and the compassion to respond without turning away.
Sometimes, compassion means having the strength to walk through difficulty with an open heart. At other times, it means listening when another is in pain, offering a helping hand, or simply being present—quietly, patiently, and without judgement.
Whenever you feel the need, you are welcome to come before the Bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara.
Offer a lamp. Bring your heart into stillness. Share your prayers, your gratitude, your hopes, or the burdens you have been carrying. There is no need for elaborate words. A sincere heart is enough.
Sit for a while.
Rest in the stillness.
Allow yourself to breathe.
Open your heart, and trust that Bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara hears your words, embraces you with love and care, and gently guides you towards peace.
Let the presence of compassion and wisdom remind you that you do not have to turn away from what is difficult. With mindfulness and understanding, even moments of difficulty can become opportunities to cultivate patience, wisdom, and compassion.
May this sacred presence at our Vihāra be a source of comfort, strength, and inspiration for you.
May we learn to see with greater clarity, listen with greater understanding, respond with greater kindness, and extend compassion to ourselves and to all beings.
